Story[]

Prologue[]

ActIII-SmithTalks-NES1

Ryu Hayabusa finally makes it to Dr. Walter Smith's house and introduces himself. Smith recognizes him as Jô Hayabusa's son going off of his sword. Ryu says that his father's last letter told him to see Smith, which alerts the latter that "it is already begun". And thus Smith sits down to inform Ryu on what he did with his father.

As an archaeologist, Smith had once went on an expedition with Jô to some old Amazon ruins, and discovered a strange statue and stone tablet. Before he could say what the tablet said, Ryu cuts him off and brings up the Demon Statue that he had brought with him. Smith confirms that was the one he was talking, and he thought it had been stolen. Smith then explains that the statue possesses enough evil power to destroy an entire nation. This is because there was a powerful demon, known as Jashin, who once came to Earth 700 years ago and caused many deaths. However, one of Ryu's Dragon Ninja ancestors, SHINOBI, stood up to fight the demon. Using the Dragon Sword, SHINOBI was able to counter each of Jashin's spells and defeat it in battle. But as the demon was not dead, SHINOBI had to confine the evil power of the demon into two statues, Light and Shadow, and confine the body inside a temple.

Smith reveals that he has the Light statue, while Ryu was holding the Shadow statue all along. As Ryu is piecing it together, a mysterious green ninja breaks into the house and steals the Shadow statue, taunting Ryu. Smith then tells Ryu to chase after the thief before it's too late.

Act III[]

Now giving chase, Ryu bursts out of Smith's house, surrounded by a pristine Crystal Lake. However, the thief called for backup (as well as the help of wild animals) to keep Ryu busy, but they are no match for him. Ryu eventually finds himself scaling the cold-blooded Lizard Mountains, then corners the thief inside Yomi's Cave. The thief reveals himself as Basaquer and tries to defend himself.

Epilogue[]

ActIII-SmithDies-PC

After killing Basaquer, Ryu retrieves the Shadow statue and swiftly rushes back, having a strange premonition. Upon getting back to Smith, he finds the man mortally wounded in the heart and rushes to his aid. Struggling to speak, Smith tells Ryu the Light Statue was stolen off of him by his attacker. He also explains that he and Jô each kept one of the statues for themselves and separated so they would never become one. The demon has been asleep for 700 years, but now it could finally wake up again. In his dying breath, Smith tells Ryu that he must stop this from happening at all costs, and that this is his moment to become the Dragon Ninja, just like SHINOBI. As Smith passes away, Ryu gets jumped from behind by three mysterious agents, who have him pinned with guns and force Ryu to come with them.

Trivia[]
