The Art of the Fire Wheels (鬼火の術 Onibi No Jutsu; "Art of the Will-O-Wisp") is a Ninpo Art used by Ryu Hayabusa throughout most of the Ninja Gaiden series. It can be found at the beginning of Chapter 2 in Ninja Gaiden and can be purchased from Muramasa in Ninja Gaiden Dragon Sword.

Description[]

Ninja Gaiden[]

Allows Ryu to control the spiritual waveforms around himself and create fire wheels that circle him.

Ninja Gaiden (NES)[]

This item has a flame circling around him at a super high speed, killing the enemy.

Ninja Gaiden II (NES)[]

Ryu can make fireballs appear out of nowhere, make them whirl around his own body and then use them to cause fatal injuries to his enemies. While he is using this fighting skill, for four seconds only, Ryu becomes invincible. However, this power of invincibility will not work when you have other items in your possession.

Ninja Gaiden III (NES)[]

Ryu can call up fire, have it rapidly revolve around him, and inflict fatal wounds on the enemy. This art lasts for 4 seconds and destroys all enemies. But take other special weapons and this will lose effect, so use it with care.

Plot[]

Ninja Gaiden[]

While rushing back to his village Ryu grabs a scroll on a lift containing the Art of the Fire Wheels. After learning the ninpo, Ryu is able to convert his ki to create spiritual fireballs that encircle him, creating a protective barrier against his enemies.

Ninja Gaiden Dragon Sword[]

Ryu uses this ninpo numerous times while fighting the Fiends and their Black Spider Ninja minions.

Advantages[]

  • Forms a defensive barrier.
  • Ryu is able to move freely while ninpo is active.
  • Longer duration than other ninpo (Xbox/PS3)
  • Ryu is invincible (NES)

Disadvantages[]

  • Cannot be upgraded.
  • Short range.
  • Low damage.
  • Ryu is not invulnerable and can be damaged by attacks that slip through. (Xbox/PS3)
  • 4 second time limit. (NES)

Utilization[]

This ninpo mainly focuses on mobile defense. It is best used to avoid being knocked down by enemies while maneuvering through obstacles. It can also be used to fend off swarming enemies while moving, however due to its low damage and short range other ninpos such as the Art of the Ice Storm and the Art of the Inazuma are more effective at crowd control.

Trivia[]

  • It is known as the Invincible Firewheels in the NES trilogy.
  • In the Vita version of NG Sigma, if successfully perform the ninpo power-up QTE, the Fire Wheels will go from 3 to 9 fire balls.
