The Cast Iron Key is a Key in Ninja Gaiden II.

In-Game Description[]

A key cast from black iron that works perfectly in spite of its age.

In comparison to other metals, black iron is a sturdy and stable material, and when seasoned, it is largely impervious to rust. The distinctive black surface is created by plunging the hot iron into water to rapidly cool it. Although keys are typically made of more resilient metals, there is a legend concerning why iron was used to make this particular key.

In the mid 18th century, a man was entrusted with the key for the Castle of Fangs. (Were this modern times, one might call him the head of security.) He was engaged to marry a beautiful young woman whom he loved dearly. On the occasion of one of their rendezvous, he found his lover's hands covered in a terrible rash.

"God refuses to recognize our betrothal! We must abandon our engagement!" she wept in despair. Retreating in confusion at this sudden manifestation of ill health, the man happened to encounter a tiny, elderly visitor from the Far East, a self-described scholar to whom he confided his entire tale of woe. The scholar said little, but upon seeing the man's collection of keys, he set about duplicating each out of iron.

This strange expedient soon cured the rash on the hands of the suitor's fiancée. Overjoyed, the pair immediately renewed their plans and wed. The elderly scholar took his leave, never to be seen again, leaving only the admonition that the man should avoid touching other metals whenever possible.

A handful of the keys forged by the old man remain in existence, still in use to this day. Some modern scholars theorize that the young bride simply had an allergic reaction to copper.
