The Difficulty Level of a game in the Ninja Gaiden series determines enemy strength and limitations the player will be presented with during gameplay. In most Ninja Gaiden games, players choose a difficulty level when starting a new game, and they cannot change the level once they have started. Traditionally, a grueling but feasible difficulty is accessible from the start, alongside an easier difficulty that is sometimes unlocked by repeatedly failing on the normal level. Successive levels of difficulty are then unlocked each time the previous level is completed, all the way up to the hardest level called "Master Ninja", or in later titles "Ultimate Ninja".
Overview[]
All games start the player on a "normal" difficulty, but, after fulfilling certain criteria, the player can opt to play through the story missions again on a higher difficulty. Typically, difficulties above the default will also alter enemy waves, having powerful enemies appear much sooner than they normally would and in greater numbers, especially in Tests of Valor. Bosses have more health and deal more damage, in addition to feature support from normal enemies during their battle. Item locations are usually rearranged and their maximum capacity is decreased. Prices at Muramasa's Shop also scale with the difficulty level.
While some games like Ninja Gaiden (Xbox), Ninja Gaiden II, and Ninja Gaiden 3: Razor's Edge allows the player to keep items and abilities gained from a previous playthrough when moving to a successive play on the same difficulty level, different difficulties always require starting out with a "fresh character" first.
