Masakado is a boss in Ninja Gaiden, Ninja Gaiden Black, NINJA GAIDEN Σ, and NINJA GAIDEN Σ PLUS, appearing in Chapter 2.
Description[]
Masakado dons a scarlet and golden samurai armour with a horned helmet (兜 Kabuto) complemented by a fanged war mask (面頬 Menpō). Wielding his cross-shaped spear (十文字槍 Jūmonji yari) with a spiked metal collar, he rides a fire-breathing demonic steed (鬼鹿毛 Onikage), armoured in a similar vein to his master.

Ninja Gaiden[]
While Ryu Hayabusa was training in the Shadow Clan's Ninja Fortress of his uncle Murai, both Master Shinobi are alerted by the kunoichi Ayane of the ongoing siege of the Hayabusa Ninja Village. Making his way through the blazing debris and the corpses of his brethren, cutting down all opposition on his path, the young Dragon Ninja ends up battling and defeating the Red Samurai and his Phantom Ninja on the Great Bridge to the Clan Leader's residence. Techniques[]
- Running Swing: while charging, swings his spear horizontally.
- Turn-around Swing: stops, rears back the steed and swings his spear diagonally, before redirecting his march.
- Spinning Swing: while marching on, swings his spears vertically in a 360° motion. Guard Breaks. Can also swings it horizontally to hit Hayabusa while airborne.
- Aerial Throw: while marching on, swings his spears horizontally when Hayabusa is airborne. If it connects, it'll turn into a grab.
- Rush Attack: charges at Hayabusa with his steed.
- Rising Slash: Guard Breaks. Usually followed by the Horizontal Slash.
- Three-Hit Combo: slashes vertically downwards, upwards and downwards again. May interrupt it at the second attack. Second and third hits Guard Break.
- Horizontal Slash: swipes from right to left.
Trivia[]
- In Mission Mode and higher difficulty settings he can be knocked off his horse. Once demounted he behaves like a normal samurai, but he deals heavy damage.
- The name "Masakado" is a translation error, as in japanese he's only referred to by his title of "Red Samurai" (赤武士).
- Masakado is only depicted as being engulfed in flames in Ninja Gaiden Sigma and Sigma Plus, whereas in previous versions he was only a red samurai.
