Ninja Gaiden 4 is an upcoming game in the Ninja Gaiden series, co-developed by Team Ninja and PlatinumGames, and published by Xbox Games Publishing. Players take the role of Yakumo of the Raven ninja clan in a corrupted Tokyo after the death of the Dark Dragon. Players will also take the role of Ryu Hayabusa and the two ninja will clash.

The game set to release in 2025 on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC, as a celebration to the 30th anniversary of Team Ninja.

Story[]

A significant amount of time after the events of Ninja Gaiden 3, as the Dark Dragon was seemingly slain, its remains cause the Rain of Darkrot over Tokyo, indicating the divine dragon still lives. Yakumo, a young ninja from the Raven clan - a rival of the Hayabusa clan - dives into the ruined capital to slay the Dark Dragon and bring peace to the world.

Standing in Yakumo's path are the Divine Dragon Order, an organization responsible for policing the desolate city. This group guards the Seal of the Dark Dragon, and controls a horde of Fiends lurking through the world.

Development[]

The team designed Yakumo to be someone who can stand alongside Ryu Hayabusa, who is the pinnacle of what it means to be a ninja, and a potential Master Ninja of the next generation. His combat style is slightly different than Ryu's, but feels familiar enough that veteran players from the previous game will be able to quickly grasp at the fundamentals.

The game will remain true to the challenge and deep action that defines the Ninja Gaiden series, while incorporating the speed and dynamic expression that is signature of PlatinumGames. The team aims to provide a fair and engaging combat experience where players fight relenteless enemies.

Combat will retain the fast speed the reboot series is known for, as well the return of Obliteration and Ultimate Techniques from previous titles. There is also the new Raven Style and Bloodbind Ninjutsu Nué Style employed by Yakumo as an evolution to the combat formula, which can be used unleash dynamic attacks and instant kill opponents, or to take on multiple enemies at once when vastly outnumbered.

The Fiends make a return, and will be marked by both returning and new creatures for the players to slay.

The game is preserving the dark, hardcore atmosphere of the reboot series, with chaotic landscapes to evoke danger in every corner. To give the player a sense of progression, the city slowly crumbles and collapse as Yakumo advances, playing a role in the visual storytelling. Environments will feature enhanced verticality, where the player must use both familiar and new techniques to interact and traverse the terrain; Yakumo can wall-jump and wall-run much like Ryu can in previous titles, but also use grappling hooks to reach higher heights, and even slide on train rails.
