Ninja Gaiden Trilogy (忍者龍剣伝 巴 "Ninja Ryukenden Tomoe") is a game released on August 10, 1995 for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System. It includes the three original NES games with remastered graphics and music as well as tweaked gameplay. The collection was not released in Europe.
Content[]
The collection includes Ninja Gaiden (1988), Ninja Gaiden II: The Dark Sword of Chaos, and Ninja Gaiden III: The Ancient Ship of Doom. Though they have been ported to a more powerful console, the games occasionally suffer from slowdown, unresponsive controls and finicky hit detection, as well as having certain music tracks omitted during cutscenes. Some elements have been censored, such as Jaquio's blood, which is changed from red to green. Some of the script from the first game has also been altered, changing Jaquio's line "Argh! He's awake" to "Damn, He's awake.", as well as introducing new typos not present in the NES version.
Trilogy also includes a password system for all three games, which lets players continue from the beginning of the current act. The password however doesn't track the Ninpo upgrades in The Dark Sword of Chaos and The Ancient Ship of Doom.
Changes[]
Ninja Gaiden[]
- Some dialogues were altered slightly, including the removal of censorship by changing "argh" to "damn", but also introduced new typos such as "breake" instead of "break".
- When the cutscene focuses on the Masked Devil before the first final boss fight, the screen and dialogue texts flash constantly, making objects disappear and reappear continuously until the next screen. This is likely due to a glitch.
Ninja Gaiden II: The Dark Sword of Chaos[]
- The color-changing effect for the UI has been removed.
- The boss music was replaced with the first game's 5-1 theme, which was also used in Bloody Malth's and the The Demon's boss fights in that game.
- In cutscenes between 5-1 to 5-2 and 7-1 to 7-2, the 1-1 music was replaced with footstep sounds.
- Jaquio's blood was changed from red to green. However, other characters' blood still remain their original colors.
Ninja Gaiden III: The Ancient Ship of Doom[]
- Like The Dark Sword of Chaos, the UI now has stationary color, and the boss theme was replaced the same way.
- All damage now deals only one block of damage to Ryu, even for those that originally dealt more blocks of damage in the Famicom version.
- The original 3-2/6-1 theme was removed and replaced with the original's 4-2 track, while 4-2 and 7-3 now use the 2-1/7-2 music.
- The game in both the Japanese and North American versions of Trilogy have the same difficulty that resembles the harder NES version, with fewer checkpoints and more enemies.
