South American Amazon
Name South American Amazon
Debut Ninja Gaiden

South American Amazon is the location of Act 4-1 in Ninja Gaiden. Ryu Hayabusa is dropped off here by A. Foster so he can start making his way on foot to the Temple of Darkness.

At the end of South American Amazon, is the location of Act 4-2, Basilisk Mine Field. There is also a short cinematic showing the Temple of Darkness in broad daylight.

Ninja Gaiden[]

The South American Amazon has three rooms, the second one just being a straight climb up onto a small mountain. This is where the kid gloves come off, as the level starts demanding more specific maneuvers to get past certain setups, like with its first Gunner. "Welcome to the Jungle," if you will. The item containers also take the form of spiders on webs.

Enemies[]

Valuable Pickups (only the first room has goodies):[]

  • Jump & Slash Technique NES1SpinSlash - After the Banshee, there is a choice between an upper path and a lower path. The spider on the upper path holds this sub-weapon.
  • Windmill Shuriken NES1WindmillStar - The lower path, as mentioned above, instead has a spider that contains this sub-weapon.
  • 1-UP NES1ExtraLife - Before these two paths converge, the lower path has a dead end. The spider holding it is above a pit on the left and is protected by a Gunner. After killing the Gunner, Ryu must jump at the spider and just as he slashes, he must pull back to the platform (if not, the 1-UP or Ryu will fall into the pit).
  • Invincible Fire Wheel NES1FireRing - Located above a Bazuka Soldier. It is high up, so Ryu must get it from the right side via an upper platform. The sub-weapon will fall down in front of the Bazuka Solider.

Trivia[]

  • The Amazon rainforest is a real location in South America, being the world's largest tropical rainforest.
  • This is the first level where a 1-UP can be obtained (there are three 1-UPs across the game, and this holds the first).
  • The music in the stage, titled "Rugged Terrain", is borrowed from Act 2-2.
