The Tests of Valor, or Ambushes, (殲滅バトル Senmetsu batoru?, lit. "Annihilation Battle) are a series of optional combat challenges against waves of powerful enemies in a confined arena that the player may perform to obtain rare items and large amounts of Essence.
In Ninja Gaiden, Tests of Valor only appear at certain points in a level, often requiring entering an area again. Ninja Gaiden II requires the player to first obtain the Rod of Trials in Chapter 2 to unlock access to Tests of Valor, in this sequel simplified as glowing Stone Circle portals. In Ninja Gaiden 3: Razor's Edge, the access is signposted by a Crystal Skull hidden in an optional area of the level.
Tests of Valor in Ninja Gaiden[]
The total amount of enemies featured in a Test of Valor and their type depend on the difficulty level selected, with 60 on Normal, 80 on Hard, 100 on Very Hard, and 120 on Master Ninja[1]. While it is often possible to leave and return to a Test of Valor at any point, this will reset the Kill Counter completely, and some Tests of Valor may become unavailable after reaching a certain Chapter of the story.

The total amount of enemies featured in a Test of Valor and their type depend on the difficulty level selected, with 40 on Path of the Acolyte, 60 on Path of the Warrior, 80 on Path of the Mentor, and 100 on Path of the Master Ninja. Contrary to the previous entry, Tests of Valor in Ninja Gaiden II may reward the player with up to three containers, but some will be Mist Fish-spawning traps. A player may not leave a Test of Valor until its completion or their own defeat. The successful completion of a Test of Valor will return Hayabusa's Health and Ninpo gauges to full.

Unlike in the previous titles, the only reward for completing Tests of Valor is bonus Karma points. Furthermore, if a player fails to complete a Test of Valor, they may also choose to retry the challenge or to proceed through the story with any amount of Karma points obtained inside it so far. Both a successful or failed completion of a Test of Valor will return Hayabusa's Health gauge to full.
